• Introduction

The department was established in 1984, initially admitting students from the social sciences track. Starting in 1990, the department began admitting students from the natural sciences track. Beginning in the 1998 academic year, an additional class for social sciences students was introduced, making it the first department to admit students from two distinct academic tracks. In 2016, the department underwent restructuring, establishing the "Big Data Science Group" and the "Big Data Decision Management Group." In 2017 , these groups were further adjusted to the "Big Data Management Group" and the "Decision Management Group," which have been maintained to this day.

Since its inception, the Department of Statistics has developed steadily. In addition to teaching, faculty members have consistently provided statistical consulting services to a wide range of sectors. Over the years, its clients have included private enterprises, academic institutions, and government agencies at various levels, laying a solid foundation for applied statistics. Due to its commitment to teaching and prolific research achievements, the department established a master's program as early as 1993 and began offering a doctoral program in 2001, making it the first statistics department in central Taiwan to offer a doctoral program. Currently, the department offers two tracks: Statistics and Management, catering to students with interdisciplinary interests.
